ASLA Diversity Summit Report Juanita Shearer-Swink, FASLA, and Terry Poltrack, Director of PR & Communications, reported on the 2014 ASLA Diversity Summit, held in Washington, DC, in June. The Diversity Summit attendees honed in on key paths, aids, and obstacles encountered in entering the profession and came up with priorities and suggested action items for ASLA to consider for the next year. Strategies for working on three main action items - awareness, mentoring, and early exposure were suggested as the end result of the meeting. ASLA is committed to acting on strategies to address the issues the Summit attendees raised, which will ultimately enrich the landscape architecture community. The report sparked robust conversation on the importance of diversity in the profession. Many Fellows related initiatives and examples in their own chapters that demonstrated how mentoring students can have a great impact. New Business Topics for new business included renewal of full IFLA dues by ASLA; inclusion of more design build projects in the award process; the need for more involvement of Fellows in local chapters; and pledging to the Fellows Endowment Fund. Chair Jacobson closed the meeting discussing the importance of giving back to society especially through work with youth and young practitioners in the profession.
